Starry Night This Week

Each week most PBS stations air "Jack Horkheimer: Star Gazer", the world's first and only weekly TV series on naked-eye astronomy. The Starry Night images on this page illustrate the show for the week of Monday April 19th, 2010. You can view the complete show script, or watch a RealPlayer video of the show.

Can You See the Horse and its Rider?

Northern hemisphere observers can look north and up to see the Big Dipper (also known as Ursa Major) and the horse and rider stars known as Mizar and Alcor. They mark the bend in the Dipper's handle.

This binocular view clearly shows Mizar and Alcor as a pair. Try to see the two stars separately without binoculars!
