Starry Night This Week

Each week most PBS stations air "Jack Horkheimer: Star Gazer", the world's first and only weekly TV series on naked-eye astronomy. The Starry Night images on this page illustrate the show for the week of Monday December 12th, 2009. You can view the complete show script, or watch a RealPlayer video of the show.

Next Monday December 21st Is The Day Of The Winter Solstice
But What's It All About Anyway?

Compare the direction of the sunrise on December 21...

...with the direction of the sunrise on June 21.

When it rises that much further north in June, it's going to be above the horizon for a lot longer than it would be in December. (These observations are taken from 43 degrees north latitude; if you were close to the equator you wouldn't see as much of a difference!)
