Starry Night This Week

Each week most PBS stations air "Jack Horkheimer: Star Gazer", the world's first and only weekly TV series on naked-eye astronomy. The Starry Night images on this page illustrate the show for the week of Monday January 29, 2009. You can view the complete show script, or watch a RealPlayer video of the show.

Welcome In 2009 With The Brightest Planet
And The Brightest Star Plus The Lord Of The Rings

At midnight during the first week of January, northern hemisphere observers can look directly south to see Sirius, the brightest star in our sky. Use the belt of Orion as a pointer.

Turn to face east and you can catch a glimpse of Saturn near the horizon, underneath the constellation of Leo.
