Starry Night This Week

Each week most PBS stations air "Jack Horkheimer: Star Gazer", the world's first and only weekly TV series on naked-eye astronomy. The Starry Night images on this page illustrate the show for the week of Monday May 5, 2008. You can view the complete show script, or watch a RealPlayer video of the show.

Don't Miss Mercury at its Best This Week and Next

This is the view at 9 pm between May 5-15, looking west-northwest from midnorthern latitudes. Orion and Taurus are setting with Mercury in the middle of them.

Mercury will be higher in the sky every night at the same time, but the Sun will be setting later and later. Have a look every night to find the balance of altitude and sky darkness that lets you catch a glimpse of the planet.
