Starry Night This Week

Each week most PBS stations air "Jack Horkheimer: Star Gazer", the world's first and only weekly TV series on naked-eye astronomy. The Starry Night images on this page illustrate the show for the week of Monday January 7, 2008. You can view the complete show script, or watch a RealPlayer video of the show.

The Two Brightest Planets Prepare for a Super Close Meeting on Feb. 1st!

Half an hour before sunrise on January 7, look southeast and you can't miss Venus. Jupiter will be very close to the horizon. If Jupiter is hidden by the horizon, check it out every morning and eventually you'll be able to spot both planets.

One hour before sunrise on February 1, Venus and Jupiter will be so close together that you'll be able to see them both through binoculars at the same time!
