Starry Night This Week

Each week most PBS stations air "Jack Horkheimer: Star Gazer", the world's first and only weekly TV series on naked-eye astronomy. The Starry Night images on this page illustrate the show for the week of Monday March 18, 2002. You can view the complete show script, or watch a RealPlayer video of the show.

The Second Biggest Moon of The Year

The second brightest Full Moon of the Year on March 28th is accompanied by Spica, a bright star 260 light years away in the constellation Virgo, the Virgin. The Latin meaning of Spica is "ear of wheat," making the star a harvest symbol in ancient times.

On October 28th the Moon will be 252, 246 miles away, the farthest Full Moon of the year.
