StarGazer
Each week most PBS stations air Star Gazer with Jack Horkheimer, the world's first and only weekly TV series on naked-eye astronomy. The images on this page illustrate the show for the week of Monday, June 18, 2001.

The Fabulous Summer Solstice of 2001! Mars At Its Closest in 13 Years! And The First Total Eclipse of The Sun Of The Millennium

The summer solstice occurs when the Sun passes through a spot in the sky near the borders of Gemini and Taurus, which happens on June 20 or 21 each year.

Unfortunately for stargazers in North America, June's total eclipse of the sun can only be seen from Africa.

Mars comes within 40 million miles of Earth this month, six times closer than it was a year ago!
