"There are few experiences as invigorating as being out in the countryside standing under a canopy of star on a still night. Starry Night conveys that feeling better than any other desktop planetarium"
--New York Times

StarGazer
Each week most PBS stations air Star Gazer with Jack Horkheimer, the world's first and only weekly TV series on naked-eye astronomy. The images on this page illustrate the show for the week of Monday, October 23, 2000.

A Venus and Crescent Moon Sky Goody and Say Farewell To Sagittarius

Step outside just after dusk on October 29 and look southwest to see Venus and a crescent moon side-by-side. The bright red star Antares lies just beneath Venus.

By November 1, the Moon has moved south, just above the “Teapot”, a grouping of stars in the constellation Sagittarius. Venus is still visible just above the horizon.

The patch of sky between Venus and the moon on November 1 is in the plane of the Milky Way, so it contains many star clusters and nebulae for stargazers to look for. Three of the most famous nebulae are identified in this image.
